CCTV cameras with sound recorders are being installed in all police stations in Kanpur to "build transparency". Only police officers will be able to monitor activities happening at police stations via mobiles and ipads. “This arrangement will come into effect within four days,” Additional Commissioner of Police Anand Prakash Tiwari said.

Under the initiative by Kanpur Police Commissioner, the work of installing CCTVs started on Tuesday. Soon, all the police stations will have this facility in which the entire activities of the police stations will be captured.

Additional Commissioner of Police Anand Prakash Tiwari said, “Good quality sound recording CCTV cameras are being installed in all police stations in Kanpur so that transparency can be built.”

Till now, there were no sound recording cameras at any police station. Because of this, many times the conversations of the policemen with the accused or the complainants could not be traced. The relatives of inmates sometimes accuse the police of misbehaving in the police station, but due to lack of evidence, the truth cannot come out. This exercise has been started to overcome this problem.

Recently, the National Commission for Women (NCW) sent a notice to the Kanpur Police Commissioner to take strict action against the policemen who were involved in allegedly assaulting an elderly maid to confess her crime in the Madhu Kapoor murder case.

After these incidents and allegations, the Kanpur Commissioner decided to install CCTVs with sound recording facilities in order to develop more transparency in police stations.
