Indian cricket is in the grip of a major controversy. Virat Kohli booked a spot on the trends list on Wednesday after his press conference in which he refuted BCCI president Sourav Ganguly's claim that he had asked Kohli to not quit the T20I captaincy.

But first a recap: The BCCI last week had announced that Rohit Sharma will replace Virat Kohli as the captain of India's ODI team. The India Test captain Virat Kohli will be available for the upcoming ODI series in South Africa but he won’t be leading the ODI team.

After BCCI announced in a terse tweet that Rohit Sharma has been named India's ODI and T20I captain, Sourav Ganguly said he had asked Kohli to stay on as T20I captain. However, since Kohli did not relent, the selectors wanted to have the same man leading in both the shorter formats.

On Wednesday, however, Kohli in a press conference said he was never asked to reconsider his decision, as claimed by Ganguly. Kohli said when he approached the top brass with his decision to resign as India's T20I captain, the BCCI, in fact, welcomed the decision, terming it as a progressive move. Kohli also mentioned that he got a call 90 minutes before the BBCI announced his removal as the ODI skipper.

Soon after the press conference, Twitter users started blaming Virat Kohli’s “wokeness” for losing out on India’s ODI captaincy. The statement ensued a debate on social media.

A section of the internet has supported BCCI’s decision to replace Virat Kohli as India’s ODI captain. “This happens when someone plays less cricket and more woke (sic),” a user wrote.

Some also blamed Virat's wife, actress Anushka Sharma for his wokeness, for "changing Virat Kohli’s personality" altogether.

Notably, Virat Kohli had said that he would continue to lead India in ODIs and Tests after stepping down as T20I captain following the T20 World Cup in the UAE. However, after the selectors’ decision, it only appears that this was done keeping in mind the upcoming 2023 World Cup which will be played in India.
