In Short

  • By 2035, the first phase will see the establishment of a basic research facility
  • This initial setup will focus on creating a foundation
  • The selection of the lunar south pole is driven by its permanently shadowed regions

China has released its plan for the construction of a research station on the Moon.

The International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) aims to establish a multifaceted presence on the Moon by 2045.

The ambitious project is planned in two distinct phases. By 2035, the first phase will see the establishment of a basic research facility at the lunar south pole. This initial setup will focus on creating a foundation for regular scientific experiments and limited resource utilisation. The strategic selection of the lunar south pole is driven by its permanently shadowed regions, which are believed to contain water ice, a vital resource for sustainable lunar exploration.

The second phase of the ILRS, projected to be completed by 2045, promises an expansion into a more extensive and robust lunar base. This phase envisions a moon-orbiting space station that will serve as the central hub for the expanded facilities.

These facilities are expected to support comprehensive scientific research, resource development, and crucial technological verifications. The advancements from this phase are intended not only to enhance lunar exploration but also to lay the groundwork for future manned missions to Mars.

Accompanying the announcement, China released a concept video that provides a visual representation of the planned structures and facilities on the Moon. This video serves as both an informative tool and a call to international partners to join the groundbreaking project.

The ILRS is a demonstration of China's growing capabilities and ambitions in space. It points to the nation's commitment to becoming a leading power in space exploration, alongside fostering international cooperation.

The project aligns with global interests in returning to the Moon and using it as a stepping stone for deeper space exploration.

China will not be alone in the lunar race, the United States, Europe and other countries are also coming together to go to the Moon under the Artemis mission. India is also a signatory to the agreement.

Artemis aims to return American astronauts to the Moon and build a longer presence in and around the lunar orbit, before pushing on to Mars.
